What is God’s greatest commandment? Is it the Great Commission? Is it to honor our parents? Is it to give our tithes? In Mark 12:29-31, Jesus answered this question: 29 “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
With all our heart…so that our desires will align with God’s desires.
With all our soul…so that our will be in tune with God’s will.
With all our mind…so that our thoughts will be thoughts of Christ.
With all our strength…so that our deeds will reflect the light of Jesus.
By delighting in the presence of God, His desires become our desires. [see Psalm 37:4] By offering our lives to God and allowing Him to transform and renew us, we learn to know of His perfect will. [see Romans 12:1-2] By setting our thoughts in captivity and obedience to Christ, we set our minds on things above. [see 2 Corinthians 10:5] By reflecting Jesus in everything that we do, we point others to God – our Source of everything. [see Matthew 5:16]
By loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, we learn to receive and share His love with our neighbors as the second commandment tells us to do so. After all, we cannot give what we don’t have. We must begin with loving God so we can love others. At the same time, we cannot love someone we don’t know, so knowing God should be our first priority. As we get to know God more, we experience His love even more and we become more like Him. And as our love for Him grows, we become consumed with God and with the things of God. We begin to have compassion, just like Jesus had compassion for everyone. We begin to have a heart for reaching out and a passion to change the world for the glory of God. As we learn more about His desires, His will, His thoughts, and His example, we can share Jesus to others.
As my church’s mission states, let us continue to know God and love Him so we can make Him known and loved. “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.” [Mark 16:15]. Power Up, World Changers!
